for americans died in benghazi. we need to understand what happened there. i think it's important to put this in context. after 9/11 we declared war on al qaeda and that conflict is still going on. you have to put what happened in benghazi and what's happening in algeria in the broader struggle context that started in afghanistan and spread to iraq and is in yemen and pakistan and other places. we tend to understand that when soldiers go to war, they die in service to our country and we're grateful that they do that. once the conflict ends, we're left with fragile states with challenging situations and poor, weak governments and that's the construct that chris stevens willingly walked into because he understood that as we see a libya or egypt or tunisia or yemen move forward, the united states has to be there. while there were mistakes made and underestimations, we can't reduce it to zero. chris stevens understood the situation in benghazi better than anyone else and decided to be there and we should be grateful for his service and his sacrifice. >> the bigg

the people of benghazi are very much concerned with the interest of benghazi, misratah with misratah. tripoli is a bit of a hodge-podge because there are libyans from all over the country who live there but bringing this whole, huge country together, getting people to agree across tribal lines geographic lines on the formation of some sort of transitional government is not going to be easy and let's not forget that moammar gadhafi has ruled fairly single-handedly for the last 42 years. there are very few libyans who have experience in running their own affairs at the moment. so it is going to be a work in progress. it is probably going to be fairly messy. on the other hand, libya, unlike tunisia, unlike egypt, is a country that is blessed with lots of oil, good agricultural land, it's not crowded, it's not overly impoverished by egypt. so the prospects eventually for sort of finding its footing and realizing some sort of stability aren't bad but it is going to be difficult along the way. >> ben wedeman, thanks very much. we'll get back to ben in the coming hours with more on what's ha
